Janam Technologies LLC, a provider of rugged mobile computers that scan barcodes and communicate wirelessly, today announced that an Asian subsidiary of an international luxury goods company selected the XP Series rugged, scanning, Palm OS®-based mobile computers to run in-store applications that improve customer service.

One of the world’s most recognized luxury goods brands, this customer is one of the most advanced users of mobile, barcode-scanning technology for the purpose of bringing mission-critical data to the front lines of high fashion retailing. For example, store clerks use wireless, handheld PDAs to check current inventory, place orders and gather important customer information, making wireless security paramount.

Janam’s XP Series was selected not only because it provides more features than any other device in its class but because it protects the luxury brand’s investment in systems and applications built for the Palm operating system. It was chosen also for Janam’s ability to quickly deploy an Extensible Authentication Protocol-Flexible Authentication via Secure Tunneling (EAP-FAST) solution, a secure wireless authentication protocol that enables the company to protect essential store and customer data against unauthorized access.

The deployment of Janam’s XP30W, a color-LCD version of the XP Series with both Bluetooth and 802.11b WLAN, has already begun in Hong Kong, with plans to replace hundreds of units of legacy Palm OS® product throughout Asia and rest of the world.

The XP Series from Janam is the world’s first, rugged, mobile computer that combines Palm OS Garnet®, numeric keypad option, user-accessible memory, NAND flash memory backup, USB connectivity, extended capacity battery option and, in WLAN versions, WiFi Protected Access (WPA) wireless security. All XP Series products meet IP54 sealing requirements, survive drops to concrete from 4’ to all six sides and weigh less than 10 ounces.
